Effortless Summer Makeup
Skin Care & Cosmetics
Cool, calm and collected is how we all want to feel during the hazy, lazy days of summer. So how do we keep a cool complexion throughout the heat of summer?
Here are some tips so the soaring temps don’t ruin your look:
First off, it’s important not to neglect our winter moisturizing habits. Don’t be fooled by the damp glow on your skin. That is moisture being drawn out by the heat (also known as sweat!). It’s important to nourish and replenish.
To maintain your moisture levels while keeping your oiliness at bay, consider my go-to product, Countercontrol by Beautycounter. This “mind over matte-r” formula controls excess oils while giving nourishment and the right amount of moisture throughout the day.
In addition to this, we should “refresh” with a spritzer! (I don’t mean the kind you drink, but they’re pretty “refreshing” too!). No matter your skin type, there is a facial mist to relieve and cool your overheated skin. My go-to is Beautycounter’s brightening, plumping, or balancing facial mists. Keep it in the fridge and spritz your complexion throughout the day.
Now, as we all know, makeup and summer don’t mix well; makeup will move around with the humidity. The best way to avoid the slipping, sliding and creasing is to wear less. We all tend to glow naturally in the summer, anyway. However, if you choose to wear makeup, here are my pro tips to help you maintain a beautiful look from early morning to late evening:
Moisturizing is key. I find a mattifying moisturizer is best to get the moisture you need without all the excess oil.
Apply a lightweight tinted foundation with SPF. Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer by Beautycounter delivers lightweight hydration, a hint of sheer coverage and SPF 20 protection.
Skip the shimmer! Everyone loves a nice dewy glow, but don’t overdo it. Avoid anything too luminous, as the humidity will make you look extra shiny and sweaty.
Apply a cream blush instead of a powder to avoid creasing and caking. To increase its wear, dust a light invisible setting powder overtop – just enough to lock in the colour, but not mattify it.
This is the perfect time to play up the colours in your makeup palette. Besides looking summery, lively colours brighten the face and bring a youthful glow to the skin.
If you prefer neutrals, experiment with colour on one area of your face. A pop of blush on the apples of the cheeks is a good place to start.
Mascara that is water resistant is a must. Personally, I stay away from waterproof as it contains some pretty nasty ingredients.
Finish with a cool spritz of facial mist. It’ll set your makeup and enhance your healthy glow.
Pro tip: Keep blotting papers in your purse. They eliminate unsightly shine and they're inexpensive and easy to use — just press and go!
